Tribute & Message From The Family

Johnny Overholt, 83, went home to be with the Lord. He never turned down an invitation and the final, ultimate invitation from his God was accepted on December 28. John was the son of the late Joseph and Verna Overholt. Johnny was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, coach, and friend to many.

Over the course of his life, he was a milkman, basketball star, draftsman, gardener, softball player, football coach, can collector, cattle rancher, landlord, world traveler, volunteer, reunion planner, and poker player.

John was a 1952 graduate of Central High School and was well-known as a basketball player, quarterback and track star. He married the love of his life, Judy Reese, in 1957 and together they raised two children, Cindy and David. He attended Ball State, became a draftsman and retired from W.S. Shamban.

He mentored many young men during his 19 years as coach of the PAL Colts football team, leading them to numerous championships. He and Judy were true sports fans attending sporting events of all kinds, but loved following local high school teams and players. For over 30 years, he attended every IHSAA football championship game. He gave time aiding at local high school athletic events.

In his retirement, he was known as the "can man"; collecting, recycling, saving money for grandchildren. He couldn't pass a discarded can without picking it up.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Judy, daughter Cindy (Gerry) Hemmelgarn, son David (Cathy), grandchildren Kirk and Ryan (Kendra) Bowser, Elizabeth (Ryan) Belcher, Erin (Matt) Dammann, Anne and Amy Hemmelgarn, brothers Larry (Nancy) and Ron Overholt, sister-in-law Dorothy (Jim) Overholt, and 7 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Verna (Knisely) Overholt, brother Jim and sister Geraldine (Dale) McEldowney.

Funeral at 11 am on January 2 at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, with visitation at the church one hour prior. Visitation will be January 1 at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Rd, from 4-8 pm. Memorial contributions to Fort Wayne Police Athletic League.

Condolence & Memory Journal

To John's family,
Just heard of your fathers passing from George Bopp (Former Vikings coach). I have the honor of knowing your dad for many years through PAL. I too coached the Raiders with Mark Rody for 26 years and always looked forward to seeing John at the PAL golf outings and anytime we crossed paths at the PAL Center. We had many great conversations about PAL and its goals in helping kids. His first thought was always "it is about the kids". His heart is in the right place and now so is he. My condolences and happiness that he is home. May your tears turn to smiles as you share all the wonderful memories you have. May God bless you and comfort you.

I arrived in 1973 at Foster Park for the first of my three seasons as a PAL Football Colt. For the next three years coach Overholt taught us that we had to be in better shape and work together to be a championship football team. He was right. Under his leadership we were the dominant PAL team in my years and the others to come. I'll be forever thankful to him for making me a better football player and better person growing up.
